Breathing a rich dose of soul into the cool digital world, Artemis brews up seductive sonic concoctions, deftly weaving poetry and pure emotion into psychoacoustic landscapes pulsing with life both otherworldly and organic. With her roots in classical and folk music, training in vocal traditions from several corners of the globe, and an ear for innovation, Artemis puts electronic music's limitless spectrum to bold use. Her style ranges from sparse and sparkling to richly symphonic, blending elements of trip-hop, downtempo, drum and bass, breakbeats, and electro-pop to create a potent fusion set ablaze with siren vocals as riveting as they are intimate.
If such a joyous sonic welter as the music of Oakland's Artemis needs a handle, then call it "pavement psychedelia," or "urban robot raga" or "trip-pop." On a song like "Hypno," spectral keyboard washes and sinuous dance beats set up a feeling of warm alienation before the singer's voice heats things further. Over the thump and shimmer, she croons with detached fervor, the production dissolving in a storm of pixie-dust disco until a rude riot of effects snaps the tether and she vanishes.
Aesthetically, the band is a poppier variant on trip-hop, with layers of beats and synth effects providing atmospherics for sophisticated classic rock song structures and the velvet swoop of Artemis's vocals.
Artemis co-produces and performs with various members of the RTFM collective, which includes the polymathic likes of Daniel Berkman (aka Colfax, multi-instrumentalist and wizard of the kora, a twelve-string harp-lute used extensively in West African music), Cliff Tune (the drummer, who adds to orthodox skin-pounding masses of programmed beats layered for pallidly funky effect), Keith Crusher (producer, programmer and sonic theoretician) and newcomer Daniel Durrett, who doles out mind-bending effects with ease, lowering the ambient temperature to dry-ice.
New album is out!

Ben Westbeech is back, and back in style, by the sounds of this new track 'The Book'. Take a listen below. His new album, There's More To Life Than This, out on Strictly Rhythm records. (Below Zero is bringing this back from the vault from 2009 as we believe it needs a second look in 2018)
Welcome to world. Welcome to a truly multi-talented musical force. Welcome to an album that's a hybrid of myriad styles and genres Welcome to something unexpected, heartfelt, genuine, true and most importantly of all, fun. Welcome To The Best Years Of Your Life - Ben Westbeech's debut album - displays a wide range of musical influences and styles.
Futuristic suburban soul, fuzzy-edged funk, unpretentious pop, robust jazz, freshly laced hip-hop and dancefloor derived sounds ranging from drum n bass to house are all present. The result is a potent cocktail blended by, and filtered through, Ben's creative and multi-talented musicianship. Rather than confine himself to the role of singer-songwriter, classically trained Ben also takes the credit for playing most of the instruments, and for much of the mixing and production of the album too.

The music of Amsterdam-based psych pop/soul duo Feng Suave is reminiscent of bygone times when vocals are drowned in reverb and instruments are seemingly recorded under water. Because the soulful vocal melodies alluding to the 60s and 70s and punchy, seismic bass lines make for a warm, genre-defying, psychedelic deluge of airwaves embellished with dreamy effects.
